1. The Success of our Students
- Herron hosted a screening of the Emmy-award winning documentary, based on the book, “Invisible Women, Forgotten Artists of Florence” and lecture with the author, Jane Fortune. http://www.herron.iupui.edu/blog/09082013/book-beloved-%E2%80%9Cindiana-jane%E2%80%9D-spawns-emmy-winning-documentary
- Herron is establishing a Center for Design and Digital Fabrication. The school was awarded $355,000 from Integrated Technology Services on the IUPUI campus to acquire the necessary equipment for start-up.
- Herron hosted an exhibition, Combat Paper, which featured works from the national Combat Paper Project. In conjunction there were various student and community learning opportunities and lectures around veteran’s issues, PTSD and family support. - Herron hosted “Juvenile In Justice” an international art show documenting incarcerated juveniles in the U.S. A lecture by the artist, Richard Ross was attended by more than 200 students and faculty, from across campus in disciplines such as social work, law, public health and political science as well as members of the Indianapolis community. http://www.herron.iupui.edu/press/2014-02-03/richard-ross-redux-juvenile-justice-continues-its-international-tour-de-force-stop-
- Herron hosted 7 Visiting Artist Lectures during the academic year which were attended by 1,181 students, faculty and community members.
- A total of 28 students participated in Herron’s International Study Program to Central Europe, Spain and England. Of these, 23 received scholarship support totaling $24,500.
- Herron received approvals for a new major in Illustration and minors in Design Production and Art & Technology.
- Associate Professor of Ceramics, Lesley Baker participated in a five-week artist residency in Jingdezhen, China. This included presenting a public lecture and the acquisition of one of her ceramic works of art for their permanent collection. Baker also had work selected for the 20th Annual National Ceramics exhibition at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art.

- Seven new endowed scholarships were established by family and friends: Alpha Blackburn Scholarship for the Arts, Gary L. Freeman Memorial Sculpture Scholarship, Deloris B. Garrett Outstanding Artist Scholarship, Dorit S. Paul Outstanding Artist Scholarship, Chelsea G. Stillwell Memorial Scholarship, Brian David Smith Memorial Art Scholarship and Lois Main Templeton Outstanding Artist Scholarship.
- A total of $1,044,237 was raised during fiscal year 2014 through generous support from 595 friends, alumni, corporations and foundations
- Herron was the very first art and design school to be featured in a Google 360 tour. 2. Advances in Health and Life Sciences
- A group of Art Therapy students secured materials and created a mural for a sensory room at the RISE Learning Center, a public school that serves children with special educational needs. http://www.herron.iupui.edu/blog/09092013/art-therapy-volunteers-give-rise-%E2%80%9Csensory-room%E2%80%9D-more-sensing
- Assistant Professor Helen Sanematsu published two articles in Touchpoint, the Journal of Service Design, vol.5, no. 4. “Empowering Patients and Impacting Providers Designing for Service in Federal Research Agendas” and “Health Matters: Reframing Design in Community Health Interventions”. She also presented “Listening to Patients and Talking to Doctors: A Case for Medicine & A Call to Action” at the AIGA Design Educator’s Conference in March, 2014.
- Herron Visual Communication Design students teamed with Jennifer Walthall, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, at IU Health’s Riley Hospital for Children, to create an ATV awareness campaign to promote safety. http://www.herron.iupui.edu/blog/13112013/er-doc-seeks-herron-design-help-prevent-instead-treat-atv-injuries
- Under the leadership of Associate Professor Youngbok Hong, a team of Herron Visual Communication Design students worked with IU Health researchers to develop a survey tool and obtain information on how under-served populations define health and health-eating. The results of this study will be used to design health messaging to under-served communities.
- Assistant Professor and Director of the Art Therapy Program Juliet King attended the Ars Medica: Science, Clinical Practice and Art conference, organized by the University of Zagreb School of Medicine and the Croatian Medical Association Society for the Protection and Promotion of Mental Health. She presented Art Therapy is a Brain-Based Profession, based on her research in art therapy and neuroscience.
3. Contributions to the Well-Being of the Citizens of Indianapolis, the State of Indiana and Beyond
- Sculpture major Rebekka Bodine was an artist-in-residence, helping 350 Washington Township students accelerate their understanding of English while developing a sense of place through art making. - The 2013 Jane Fortune Outstanding Women Visiting Artist Lecturer was artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Cuba’s 2013 artist representative at the Venice Biennale. - Through the Basile Center for Art Design and Public Life, Shelly Spicuzza, a first-year M.F.A. candidate, and Steven Baker, Sam Ladwig and Freeland Southard, second-year M.F.A. students, were awarded commissions to create site-specific benches as part of the Herron’s collaboration with the Lilly Arbor Project. http://www.herron.iupui.edu/blog/10012014/herron-graduate-students-land-commissions-artworks-along-white-river
- The Arts Council of Indianapolis partnered with Clear Channel Outdoor to create billboards featuring Indiana artists. Seven, of the 10 artists selected to create billboards were Herron faculty and alumni. - Herron hosted its’ first-ever High School Art Invitational in the spring of 2014. Open to high school juniors, this exhibition allowed students to submit works and compete for scholarships to Herron. http://www.herron.iupui.edu/galleries/exhibitions/high-school-art-invitational
- A cohort of 8 students completed the requirements to receive their M.A. degrees from Herron’s Art Therapy Program. All eight students in the first graduating class are now employed in the field of art therapy. Students within this program are currently providing professional services with more than 30 social and health service organizations as part of their training.
- Professors Craig McDaniel and Jean Robertson had their book, “Painting as a Language: Material, Technique, Form Content” translated into Chinese by Phoenix Fine Arts Publishing. This is their second book to be translated into Chinese.
- Associate Professor of Foundation Studies William Potter has been selected to serve as a Vice President of Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE), a national organization dedicated to the promotion of excellence in introductory, college-level studio and art history courses. http://www.herron.iupui.edu/press/2013-08-20/two-herron-faculty-members-selected-national-posts
- Associate Professor of Furniture Design Cory Robinson has been selected as a Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the Furniture Society, an international, nonprofit, educational organization. http://www.herron.iupui.edu/press/2013-08-20/two-herron-faculty-members-selected-national-posts
- The Glick Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), made a $17,850 gift to Herron’s Saturday School Program to provide need-based scholarships for students to attend these art programs. http://www.herron.iupui.edu/press/2013-12-02/glick-fund-gift-herron-school-art-and-design-will-provide-70-needbased-scholarships
- Dean Valerie Eickmeier presented on Herron’s Basile Center for Art, Design and Public Life to the International Council of Fine Art Dean’s at their New Orleans conference. The presentation was about the philosophy, education and execution of community-based partnerships in art and design.
